Lyor Cohen’s upcoming management company just got very interesting even though nothing has been officially announced.
Reports Hip Hop Wired:
Sources say the former Chairman/CEO of Warner Music Group will be bringing on Hip-Hop exec Irv Gotti as a partner. The Inc. Records (formerly Murder Inc.) founder has also been allegedly been making moves to become Drake’s manager.
The New York Post reports that the deal for Gotti and Cohen to become partners was solidified this week. With Cohen looking to secure West as a client and Gotti aiming to do the same with Drake, their talent management firm would be an immediate power player in the music industry. “If Lyor and Irv do work together, it’s possible they’ll have two of the biggest hip-hop stars under their management,” a “music insider” source told the Post.
This source, cites a photo of Gotti and Drizzy chopping it up (see next page) as proof of this.
Gotti and Cohen worked together previously while both were executives at Def Jam Records. However, as of now all these moves as far as their first clients is all speculation considering Drake is currently managed by Cortez Bryant while Yeezy is represented by Creative Artists Agency’s Cara Lewis, after cutting ties with Irving Azoff earlier this year.
Another point that may fuel talk of Drake asserting himself beyond YMCMB’s reach (Cortez manages Lil Wayne) is the pending move of the Toronto rapper’s OVO label to Warner Bros.
As for Irv Gotti, he’s been trying to get officially back into the biz for a long minute now. Last year, he made a case for why he was best fit to fill the then vacant Def Jam President gig while on MTV’s RapFix. “If you don’t want to hire me — the best man for the job, the man who will die for it — cool, I understand,” Gotti told MTV News. “You think I’m Suge Knight, you think the feds may come in here again if you hire me, cool.”
Also worth noting, the NY Post said Gotti produced Jay-Z’s first hit, “Can I Get A…” in 1998. Umm, two years prior to that there was a little ditty called “Ain’t No Ni–a,” produced by The Jaz, that was Hova’s first hit.
