Well, look, if you look at the NFL, they were able to settle theirs — and I think they understood. Players were making millions of dollars. Owners, some of us are worth billions of dollars. We should be able to figure out how to split a $9 billion pot so that our fans, who are allowing us to make all of this money, can actually have a good season. And I think the owners and the basketball players need to think the same way.

I think they need to remind themselves that the reason they are so successful is because a whole lot of folks out there love basketball. Basketball has actually done well, but these types of lockouts take a long time to recover from.

Look, people are frustrated, and that frustration has expressed itself in a lot of different ways. It expressed itself in the Tea Party. It’s expressing itself in Occupy Wall Street. I do think that what this — what this signals is that people in leadership, whether it’s corporate leadership, leaders in the banks, leaders in Washington, everybody needs to understand that the American people feel like nobody is looking out for them right now. And, traditionally, what held this country together was this notion that if you work hard, if you are playing by the rules, if you are responsible, if you are looking out for your family, you are showing up to work every day and doing a good job, you’ve got a chance to get ahead. You’ve got a chance to succeed. And, right now, it feels to people like the deck is stacked against them, and the folks in power don’t seem to be paying attention to that. So if everybody is tuned in to that message and we are working every single day to figure out how do we give people a fair shake and how do we make sure that everybody is doing their fair share, then people won’t be occupying the streets because they will have a job and they will feel like they are able to get ahead. But, right now, they are frustrated. And part of my job over the next year is to make sure that if they are not seeing it out of Congress at a minimum, they are seeing it out of their President, somebody who is going to be fighting for them.

They read the First Lady’s recent interview with iVillage where she said, “Barack really thinks some of the Kardashians — when they watch that stuff — he doesn’t like that as much.”

According to TMZ, the Kardashians were “surprised” by the news because Obama personally told Khloe he thought “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” was a “great show” when they met last year.

Kardashians actually believe that Sasha and Malia could learn something from the show because it features girls in real-life situations facing real-life problems.

Reports the Times Leader:

The $447 billion plan died on a 50-49 tally that garnered a majority of the 100-member Senate but fell well short of the 60 votes needed to keep the bill alive. The tally had been 51-48, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., switched his vote to “nay” so that he could force a future revote.

Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Scranton joined most Democrats voting for the jobs bill, while GOP Sen. Pat Toomey of Zionsville joined other Republicans in voting against the measure.

“President Obama’s latest stimulus bill contains hundreds of billions of dollars in increased spending and more tax hikes, which won’t create jobs any more than his last stimulus bill did,” Toomey said in a statement.

“With the unemployment rate at 9.1 percent, we do not have time to waste on political games and big tax increases that will only make our economy weaker for all Americans.”

Toomey said he supports a “real jobs plan” that includes reducing federal regulations and ratifying pending trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea and Panama, which he says will increase Pennsylvania exports.

But Casey said he has advocated breaking up the jobs bill into different pieces, “starting with the tax cut to help businesses hire workers.”

Partisan gridlock in Congress “has again halted efforts to put Pennsylvanians back to work. Tonight’s vote wasn’t even on passage of the jobs bill. It was on whether to begin debate,” Casey said in a statement after the vote.

The demise of Obama’s package was expected, despite his campaign-style efforts to swing the public behind it. The White House and leaders in Congress were already moving on to alternative ways to address the nation’s painful 9.1 percent unemployment, including breaking the legislation into smaller, more digestible pieces and approving long-stalled trade bills.

The White House appears most confident that it will be able to continue a 2-percentage-point Social Security payroll tax cut through 2012 and to extend emergency unemployment benefits to millions of people — if only because, in the White House view, Republicans won’t want to accept the political harm of letting those provisions expire.

Reports NPR:

States can now apply for waivers so that they won’t face federal sanctions under the sweeping Bush-era legislation. The announcement could fundamentally affect the education of tens of millions of children. It will allow states to scrap the requirement that all children must show they are proficient in reading and math by 2014 — a cornerstone of the law — if states meet conditions designed to better prepare and test students.

The president said he had to take action because Congress has tried but failed to pass an update to the law. During a White House ceremony, Obama said that is why he has to grant waivers to states that are making good-faith efforts but still can’t meet the standards of the law.

“Congress hasn’t been able to do it. So I will,” Obama said. “Our kids only get one shot at a decent education.”

He said better education was at the heart of a solid American economy of middle-class jobs and that compared with other nations, the U.S. was slipping.

Under the plan Obama outlined, states can ask the Education Department to be exempted from some of the law’s requirements if they meet certain conditions, such as imposing standards to prepare students for college and careers and setting evaluation standards for teachers and principals.

Despite allowing states to do away with the approaching 2014 deadline, Obama insisted he was not weakening the law, but rather helping states set higher standards. He said that the current law was forcing educators to teach to the test, give short shrift to subjects such as history and science, and lower standards as a way to avoid penalties and stigmas.

The curriculum in schools is set by legislation and politics. You will have good teachers and bad teachers. If you have a good curriculum it can withstand a bad teacher. If you have a bad curriculum it cannot withstand a bad teacher or a good teacher. We must look at how we legislate the curriculum first. But what do I know…I’m just a jeweler.

Codenamed “Stagecoach” when the President is aboard, the bus was built by well-known Canadian motorcoach builders Prevost, with an interior fitted by Nashville-based Hemphill Brothers Co., all to the tune of $1.1 million. The Secrete Service actually bought two of these buses using a fund for transportation and armored vehicles. The second will be used by whoever winds up being the 2012 Republican presidential nominee. The President’s protectors also claim this purchase will turn out to be both cheaper and safer than what they used to do, which is lease a bus and temporarily outfit it with the required safety equipment.

As for what keeps the President safe in his tuxedo black motorcoach, the Secret Service is understandably silent on the issue of specs. If we use the Presidential limousine as a baseline, the new bus can likely withstand bullets, small bombs and chemical attacks, at the very least. It also probably has a supply of the President’s own blood on board in case of emergencies, just like the limo, not to mention a robust cache of arms. A motorcade of over two dozen support vehicles also travels with the bus.

We’re also in the dark about what’s inside, but we hear it’s nothing like what NASCAR drivers get. ABC News reports those who have seen the inside called it “subdued,” and that the full bedroom in back has been replaced with a meeting room. Not many people beyond Obama’s senior staff have even seen the inside of the bus. A cabinet secretary reportedly hitched a ride for a leg of the trip, but other guests on the tour travel behind the president in a dark red bus.
